Nam Ngao Dam Hydropower info by Hobo Maps - Go to Hydropower Projects Page - - - HOME

Nam Ngao Hydropower Project is planned to be located near Ban Namsen and Pak Ngao, Houay Xay District, Bokeo Province, Lao PDR about 15 km northwest of Houay Xay, the capital of Bokeo Province.

The project is to be developed by Laos-based Heuangpaseuth Hydropower Co., Ltd..

The installed capacity is to be either 15 MW (2 at 7.5 MW) with annual 58 GWh power capacity or 18 MW (see below).

The approximate coordinates of the project site are: 20°23'00.6"N 100°23'39.1"E (20.383500, 100.394200)

Nam Ngao Dam estimated location is shown in map below at the blue star:

The project is a run-of-river hydropower type which includes fixed weir with head pond, sandtrap, intake structure, headrace canal, headrace tunnel, forebay, penstock, powerhouse and tailrace.

The developers claim the construction of the project will not result in displacement of residents or inundation of houses.

The project is expected to contribute clean green energy to the Lao and Thai Power grids and to qualify as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project under the Kyoto Protocol and earn carbon-reduction credits. By displacing part of the power generated by polluting power plants, the project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 45,375 tons per year during the first crediting period. There is conflicting information on the web about the project's number of turbines and rated capacity of output. We aren't sure which version is correct, either 15 MW or 18 MW.

This Flovel Company website notes the signing of a contract for Nam Ngao HPP (3 turbines x 6 MW) in Lao PDR which would make it an 18 MW project.

The project parameters are as follows:
Type of Turbines: Vertical  Francis
Rated Head: 32.5 m
Installed Capacity: 3  x  6,000 kW

FLOVEL’s scope includes Vertical Francis Turbine, generators, transportation up to project site including supervision of erection, testing & commissioning.
